It was a busy Father’s Day on the Cape today, 10 games in 24 hours as sunny weather helped all five double headers go off without a hitch.
Bourne (4-1) at Brewster (2-2)
Game 1: Braves 2, Whitecaps 5
Brewster was quick out of the gate, knocking in four runs in the bottom of the first inning to give the Braves their first loss of the season. It all started with three straight singles by Josh Vidales, Kyle Overstreet and Mikey White, which set the table for a two-RBI, ground-rule double by Luke Lowery. Zach Gibbons grounded out to put another run on the board and Gio Brusa rounded out the first inning runs with another RBI single. That wasn’t all for Brusa as he knocked a solo home run into left field in the third to add to the Whitecaps’ lead. Andrew Lee carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, as the Braves were held to just two hits in the 5-2 defeat.
Game 2 Braves 4, Whitecaps 3
After dropping the first decision, the Braves fought from behind to split the double header with the Whitecaps. Brewster was once again on the board first, notching a pair of runs in the second inning, but it was a swinging bunt from Richie Martin (Florida) that sent the tying run home, and a passed ball that gave them the lead. Martin showed off his speed scoring the final run of the game from second base on an infield single from Mark Laird. But the Whitecaps wouldn’t go quietly and it was up to John Gorman (Boston College) on the mound to keep Brewster’s bats quiet. Gorman faced a a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the sixth but followed through with a six-out save to keep the Braves on top.
Wareham (1-4) at YD (2-3)
Game 1: Wareham 1, YD 7
The Red Sox tallied their first W of the season with a strong offensive showing to put them up 7-1 in the first of two contests against the Gatemen. Rob Fonseca lead the charge with a three run home run going 1-for2 on the night with a walk and two runs. Donnie Walton and Jason Goldstein also put up a solid effort at the plate, each going 2-for-4 on the night. On the other side of things, Wareham’s Willie Calhoun went 3-for-4 with one double, though it wasn’t enough to match up to YD’s hot bats. Phil Bickford got the win for the Red Sox pitching three innings with three hits and three strike outs.
Game 2: Wareham 1, YD 3
The bats were quieter for YD in the second game of the double header, but that didn’t prevent them from improving their record to 2-3 on the season with another win. It might not have been glamorous, but Andrew Simcox did exactly what he needed to to keep the Red Sox on top. He didn’t tally a hit in three at bats, but his back-to-back sacrifice flies in the third and fifth innings were necessary insurance runs as the Gatemen threatened to even the score. Brennon Lund was another key player, going 2-for-2 with a walk.
Hyannis (3-1) at Harwich (4-1)
Game 1: Hyannis 2, Harwich 0
Both teams entered the first game of their double header having not lost a game this season. Hyannis quickly took control, and that was all they needed. They scored two quick runs, one in the first inning and one in the third, both off of Mariners starter Jared Poche (LSU), and those would be the only runs scored all game. Poche became the first Harwich starter this season to give up a run. His adversary on the opposing mound was Jordan Minch (Purdue), who had a shutout outing. The Mariners would end up outhitting the Harbor Hawks, but it was not enough.
Game 2: Hyannis 2, Harwich 5
The Harbor Hawks remained undefeated for only a few hours, as they fell in game two to the Mariners. 2013 All-Star Ian Happ (Cincinnati) led the way with a 3-for-3 game, while the Harwich bullpen continued to be very strong, pitching three shutout innings in relief of starter Jon Harris (Missouri St.). Harris went four inning, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out eight, outmatching Hyannis starter Blake Hickman (Iowa), who allowed four runs on four hits in three innings of work. Ben DeLuzio (Florida St.) was the only Hawk with a multi-hit game in Game Two, as it was the Hyannis offense that fell short in the nightcap. The Harbor Hawks are now 3-1, while the Mariners are 4-1.
Falmouth (3-2) at Orleans (1-4)
Game 1: Falmouth 6, Orleans 5
In a back and forth offensive battle, it was the Commodores that came out on top in the early game. Falmouth starter Nicholas Cooney (Wesleyan) struggled, but relievers Kyle Zimmerman (Wayne St.) and Kevin Mooney (Maryland) closed the game with three no-hit innings. At the plate, 2013 Cape League batting champ Kevin Newman (Arizona) went 3-for-4 with a home run and Conner Hale (LSU) added a deep ball of his own, along with two runs scored and three RBIs. Orleans battled hard, as Christin Stewart (Tennessee) went 2-for-3 with a home run and Edwin Rios (Florida Intl) had a homer too and three RBIs, but it wasn’t enough.
Game 2: Falmouth 9, Orleans 3
The night game was not as close, as nearly every batter in the Falmouth lineup drove in a run, and second-year man Leon Byrd Jr. (Rice) was especially clutch, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Commodores starter Brad Lebozzetta (FGCU) allowed two earned runs on two hits in 3.1 innings, and the bullpen helped him out with 3.2 shutout innings. On the Orleans side, hits were hard to come by and the fielding didn’t help either. Gianni Zayas (Seminole St.) gave up six runs, but only three were earned. The Firebirds drop to 1-4, while the Commodores improve to 3-2.
Cotuit (3-2) at Chatham (1-4)
Game 1: Cotuit 4, Chatham 1
There was not much offense to go around in this one, as the teams combined for eleven hits, only one of which was an extra-base hit, and no player on either side had a multi-hit game. Garrett Heyward (Duke) got the start for Cotuit and threw 2.1 shutout innings, and Adam Whitt (Nevada) finished the game with 2.1 no-hit innings of his own. For the Anglers, Tanner Scott (Howard) did not allow any earned runs in his four-inning start, but was saddled with the loss due to two unearned runs. Altogether, Chatham gave up less hits than Cotuit, but the Kettleers took better advantage of their offensive opportunities than the Anglers.
Game 2: Cotuit 3, Chatham 0
Chatham’s offense was even more anemic in the night game, as four Kettleer pitchers combined to allow only one hit as they swept the Anglers. Logan Taylor (Texas A&M) had two big RBIs and Jake Fincher (NC St.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a run driven in, and a stolen base as Cotuit edged out the victory. Chatham starter Max Tishman (Wake Forest) got the team in a hole early, and without any offensive support, that was all that was needed. The Anglers are now 1-4, and the defending champs jump to 3-2.
Cape Cod Baseball League
