Playing above the influence

Chris Herren, former Boston Celtics player, will be a special guest on Friday, June 19th from 4-5:30 p.m. at Doran Park, home of the Bourne Braves at the event “Playing Above the Influence”. The event will also feature a Fire Department slip & slide, obstacle course, free food and T-shirt, and a chance to meet the Bourne Braves players. Herren, who is from Fall River, MA, was once an extremely talented basketball player drafted by the Boston Celtics but lost his career to drug addiction. At one point, Herren overdosed on heroin and had been dead for 30 seconds before being brought back to life. He later received intense treatment from a rehabilitation center, Gosnold on Cape Cod, and now goes around speaking to people about his story and his recovery. His story is very powerful and this is an important event, especially with the drug problems currently hurting Cape Cod and the state of Massachusetts. Hearing Herren’s story is eye-opening, and the documentary titled Ungaurded chronicling his life that aired on ESPN in 2011 was nominated for two Emmys. I was lucky enough to hear Herren speak at Nauset High School when I was a junior there, and it changed my life. I encourage everyone to attend this event in Bourne and meet Chris Herren, who is a very inspirational person. Cape Cod is about community, and this is also a great chance for young kids to meet the firemen and police officers who work hard in their community, and the players of the Bourne Braves. It is a fun and informative event for people of all ages.
